Honey dressings

Manuka honey dressings provide antimicrobial, debridement and moist wound healing properties

User Guidance

  • Honey dressings should not be used on patients allergic to bee venom
  • Honey can increase wound exudate so consideration is needed regarding suitability for wounds with moderate-high exudate levels and secondary dressing selection
  • Discomfort may be experience with initial application of honey, this should subside in 15-20 minutes. If not, ensure dressing removed and wound irrigated to remove residual honey.
  • Honey is safe for use on patients with diabetes however it is advised blood sugars are monitored during use

It is recommended antimicrobial dressings are prescribed for two weeks for treatment and then reviewed.
